Yet, it is through the creation of these objects that we are capable of interpreting these very environments. The project proposes five acrylic vitrines, corresponding to the five main ecoregions of Canada, and sit upon CNC-milled topographic models. Each vitrine contains an iconic object; a digital artefact representing Canadians’ inherent geographic imagination of each ecoregion. The tank world acts as a tableau vivant, condensing entire worlds and juxtaposing scales, from the ecoregion to the icon. Accordingly, the act of recording and documenting can be used as a tool to convey a new set of questions on how the Western society perceives coastal erosion, its spatial conditions and the people depending on them. The videos additionally initiate an alternative to the current surveying methods by perceiving coastal erosion as part of a whole organism to further understand the flow and process coastal erosion. Indeed, the models isolate and simplify those effects, allowing for a rudimentary comprehension of the complex spatial correlation between global warming and the ecosystem surrounding it. Leakage, containment, and filtration thus become important strategies for designing in this post-industrial landscape. These processes inform design strategies, intervening at a geologic and human scale. Prior to these tank studies, physical models were used to investigate atmospheric qualities of materiality, lighting, and transparency. Since plaster was the main medium for these models, it was studied in the tank at different states (solid, rubble, liquid, dust) while analyzing its dialogue with water. These models are read as processes that occur in tailings ponds, informing reclamation strategies for the site. Shelby Hagerman&nbsp; Tank Worlds : Miniaturising the Gigantic Collecting (Sub)Nature This project frames the device of the tank as a vitrine to explore the agency, selectivity and control of human collectors as well as to study the attributes and practices of memorializing artifacts that evoke memories. The vitrines are contemplated as devices of objectification, exploring their relationship with the found objects that are placed within them. David Gissen’s, A More Monumental, Non-Naturalistic Environment, contemplates acts of memorializing nature through abstract representation. Enter the vitrines. The vitrines engage various scales, acknowledging that they contain miniature worlds while also making evident the worlds that lie beyond their control. The selected artifacts provoke our human agency in the process of collecting. They ask us to confront our inconsistent behaviours and attitudes about objects of nature as we oscillate between controlled delight and untamed disgust. The photographic representations of the work contrast the ordered and pristine world of the vitrines (romantic naturalism) with the messy reality of the world that overtakes them (subnaturalism). The characteristics of the vitrines themselves are challenged as their imperfections are revealed. Gissen’s work, Subnature: Architecture’s Other Environments, elaborates on how the nonhuman worlds that surround our everyday are selectively celebrated as beautiful and delightful, while other worlds, forms, and objects are deemed ugly and displeasing and are therefore erased from our consideration and design thinking. Acting as a miniaturized Demilitarized Zone, or miniverse of sorts, an acrylic topography model of the Zone, along with a copper pipe base, provides testing grounds to analyze various border interactions, as well as creating Spaces of the Above, Air, Water, and the Below, coinciding with thesis drawings produced. Five experiments, one within each “space” identified, were performed, and revealed phenomena usually unseen along the border zone. This coastal tree provides habitats for an abundance of wildlife and has an ability to protect coastal communities from harsh storms. These underappreciated trees provide great value to its communities and lessons that can inform architectural design. The mangrove’s ability to filter water, protect from coastal erosion through sediment buildup, and its ability to trap garbage, preventing its distribution throughout the sea are just a few of its amazing attributes. My tank models explore these traits of the mangrove further, asking questions on what makes these trees so efficient in their filtration process? And how through the process of biomimicry can I transfer these abilities into my own designs? Water is the connection to past, current and future cycles of life. The initial experiments experiment with different textile meshes and water particulates. The various particulates can be thought of as types of pollution or as ambiguous materials at a decontextualized scale. The video links the layers of material experiments; this layering represents the cyclical nature of life and water and constitutes how bodies of water are connected to each other through the passing of time. The collage layers all of the previous experiments together. Collaging allows the information to be seen as connected entities rather than individual artefacts. The concept of decontextualized scale drawn from the photographs and the passing of time drawn from the video offer an opportunity to see these different interpretations of water in unison. These ephemeral durations range in scale from lifespan, seasonal, day to night, and hours to minutes. I start by placing my hemp-lime models into the setting of the Canadian climate to analyze the phenomena of yearly rising temperatures due to increasing atmospheric CO2. As I miniaturize the invisible gas, I represent its impact through the thawing rate of ice supplemented by increasing amounts of water. During this study, I also attune myself to the resilience of hemp-lime to varying seasonal cycles and to the end phase of material breakdown. Seeing the settling of lime and hemp lightly floating to the surface, I ask what influence these materials have on our water and soil. I then record this decomposition stage as it neutralizes acidic earth and provides nutrients. The project analyzes, interprets, and speculates how architecture and architectural representation becomes a spatio-urban bridge between the earthly and the cosmic. The project proposes a network of architectural tethers, that link this world and imagined corollaries. It connects the seen and the unseen, the sensible and the unintelligible, the physical and the metaphysical, the quotidian and the divine, serving as a timeless manifestation of hidden orders imposed on the material world through the constant motions - or harakat - of the cosmos and earth. A series of tank world experiments were conducted as a catalyst or prelude to the design of the architectural registers. The first set of experiments used a vibration speaker, to visualize sound through matter, momentarily creating intricate fractal ripples that follow the frequencies of the sound projected. Experiment 2 is a set of concaved profiles that were tested in the water and subjected to sound vibrations. These concaves surfaces reflect and focus (concentrate) sound waves, and this disturbance or change in the soundwaves is articulated on the surface of the water. The final set of experiments were an attempt to simulate the environmental phenomena of the Khamasin Winds and miniaturize the expansiveness of these dust storms within the tank model.
